For a solo developer or a homelab, it is usually more than the job needs. Gitea or Forgejo will host the same repositories on a tenth of the hardware.
Deployment notes
GitLab CE is listed with support signals for linux, docker. Check the upstream documentation before exposing it to the internet, review authentication defaults, and keep backups outside the primary host.
The Omnibus package or the official Docker image bundles PostgreSQL, Redis, and the rest. Plan for at least 4 CPU cores and 8 GB of RAM, and put runners on separate machines. Upgrades have to follow GitLab's documented upgrade path, with required stops between major versions, so skipping ahead is not an option. A backup is two things: the backup archive and the secrets file. Lose the secrets file and encrypted data such as CI variables is gone.

Mostly governance and security features: advanced approval rules, security scanning dashboards, epics and portfolio planning, and some authentication options. Core Git hosting and CI/CD are all in the free edition.
