Why people self-host Home Assistant
Home Assistant is the default local-first platform for serious smart home control. It integrates many devices, supports strong automation, and can keep household routines running without sending every event to a vendor cloud.
The tradeoff is that device ecosystems, add-ons, and YAML can become a hobby. Back up configuration snapshots and keep a manual fallback for critical lights or locks.
Deployment notes
Home Assistant is listed with support signals for linux, docker. Check the upstream documentation before exposing it to the internet, review authentication defaults, and keep backups outside the primary host.
