Who Hoarder is for
Hoarder is the earlier name of the project now called Karakeep. People still search for it under the old name, and plenty of installs still run under it. It suits the same person: someone who saves more than they organize and wants a self-hosted bookmark manager that does the sorting. If you are starting fresh, begin with Karakeep.
Deployment notes
Hoarder is listed with support signals for linux, docker. Check the upstream documentation before exposing it to the internet, review authentication defaults, and keep backups outside the primary host.
Existing Hoarder installs run as a Docker Compose stack with the web app, Meilisearch for search, and a headless Chrome container for crawling pages. Moving to Karakeep is mostly a matter of switching to the new image names and following the project's upgrade notes. Your data directory carries over. Take a copy of that directory before you change anything.
Common questions about Hoarder
Is Hoarder the same as Karakeep?
Yes. The project was renamed from Hoarder to Karakeep in 2025. The code, the maintainer, and the data format continued under the new name.
Do I need an OpenAI key to use it?
No. AI tagging is optional. Without a key it still saves, archives, and searches everything, and you can point it at a local Ollama model if you want tagging without a cloud API.
