Immich

High-performance photo and video backup for mobile libraries.

Why people self-host Immich

Immich is the closest self-hosted match for modern phone photo backup. It brings mobile auto-upload, timelines, albums, search, maps, sharing, and machine-learning features into a stack that can run on your own Docker host.

The tradeoff is operational pace: Immich moves quickly and needs careful upgrade reading. Keep database, upload, and library backups separate from the phone originals.

What Immich does well

  • iOS and Android apps that back up photos and videos in the background, in original quality.
  • A timeline, albums, shared albums, partner sharing, and a map view that feel close to Google Photos.
  • Face recognition and natural-language search that run on your own hardware.
  • External libraries for folders you already have, plus duplicate detection and a locked folder.

Who Immich is for

Immich is the one to try first if the goal is a self-hosted Google Photos alternative for a family: everyone installs the app, backup just happens, and partners can see each other's libraries. It is less suited to photographers who want folder-based management of an existing archive. That is closer to what PhotoPrism does.

Deployment notes

Immich is listed with support signals for linux, docker. Check the upstream documentation before exposing it to the internet, review authentication defaults, and keep backups outside the primary host.

Immich runs as a Docker Compose stack: the server, a machine-learning container, PostgreSQL with a vector extension, and Redis. Plan for around 6 GB of RAM or more and a few CPU cores. A GPU helps transcoding and the first machine-learning pass but is not required. Since the 2.0 stable release upgrades are calmer than they used to be, though release notes are still required reading. Back up the database dump and the upload folder together, and remember that Immich is not a backup by itself. Keep a second copy elsewhere.

Common questions about Immich

Is Immich a full Google Photos replacement?

For backup, browsing, search, sharing, and memories, yes for most people. What it lacks is the editing suite, printed products, and the convenience of someone else running the servers.

Can Immich use my existing photo folders?

Yes, through external libraries. Immich indexes the folders in place and can be told to treat them as read-only, so nothing gets moved or renamed.

Other self-hosted photos apps

  • PhotoPrism: AI-assisted photo library for browsing and organizing personal collections.
