Why people self-host Outline
Outline is a polished team knowledge base for documentation, onboarding, decisions, and internal handbooks. It works well where permissions, search, and a clean editor matter more than personal note experiments.
The tradeoff is that it expects supporting services and team-oriented administration. Plan identity, email, object storage, and backups before replacing a company wiki.

Who Outline is for
Outline is a team wiki for companies and groups that find Confluence clumsy and want a self-hosted knowledge base people will actually write in. It assumes an organization with a login system. For personal notes on a home server it is awkward, because it has no simple username-and-password sign-in.
Deployment notes
Outline is listed with support signals for linux, docker. Check the upstream documentation before exposing it to the internet, review authentication defaults, and keep backups outside the primary host.
Outline needs PostgreSQL, Redis, and file storage, either local disk or an S3-compatible bucket. It also needs an authentication provider: OIDC through something like Authentik or Keycloak, Google, Microsoft, Slack, or email magic links over SMTP. Sorting out auth is where most first installs get stuck, so decide on that before anything else. Read the license terms if you plan to offer it to others as a service. Backups are the Postgres database plus the file storage.

Can I use Outline without Google or Slack login?
Yes. Any OIDC provider works, so a self-hosted Authentik, Keycloak, or similar will do, and email magic links are available once SMTP is configured.
Is self-hosted Outline free?
The community edition is free to self-host for your own team. The developers also sell a hosted version and paid editions with extra features.
