Why people self-host Plex
Plex is listed because many self-hosters evaluate it alongside free media servers. It has polished clients, excellent discovery, and a mature remote access story, but its licensing and account model make it different from community-governed software.
The tradeoff is control: some features depend on Plex services, paid tiers, or proprietary client behavior. Treat Plex as a pragmatic option when client polish matters more than strict software freedom.
Deployment notes
Plex is listed with support signals for linux, docker, windows, macos. Check the upstream documentation before exposing it to the internet, review authentication defaults, and keep backups outside the primary host.
